Core Issues
NOW chapters focus on six priority issues including reproductive rights, ending sex discrimination/constitutional equality, promoting diversity and ending racism, economic justice, stopping violence against women, and LGBTQIA rights. Our chapter welcomes new members to help fight for women’s rights on the local and national level.
Reproductive Rights
We are expanding and protecting women’s reproductive freedom – not only by defending against continued attacks to restrict women’s access to abortion and contraception but by proactively lobbying for stronger laws and better health care delivery for the women of Charlotte.
Economic Justice
We are working to close the wage gap and end discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. We’re also empowering individuals to take charge of their careers, through our series of networking and educational events.
Promoting Diversity
We are educating voters on the women’s rights credentials of local candidates and helping to elect strong women candidates. We’re also fostering leadership within our own ranks: our internship program and activist trainings enable community members to develop and sharpen their skills to organize and speak out for women’s rights.
Violence Against Women
We are strengthening our laws, holding our justice system accountable, and breaking down long-standing public attitudes and cultural beliefs that make it difficult for rape victims to come forward and for abusers to be prosecuted.
LGBTQIA Rights
We help strengthen the fight for LGBTQIA equality and protect progress made so far. NOW is committed to fighting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in all areas, including employment, housing, health services, and child custody.
Sex Discrimination
Equality in pay, job opportunites, political structure, social security and education will remaind elusive iwhtout a guarantee of equality in the U.S. Constitution.
